Hence, there remains only the timing of the needle to the shuttle to H be accomplished. Place all the parts of the machine together, but keep the horizontal shaft gear wheel loose, with its pin out. Bring the shuttle to approach its point to the needle groove by moving the vertical gear wheel round. Now lower the needle slowly, by turning the hand wheel towards you, until it dips and rises again about i%ths of an inch. Lock the wheels together while you hold the two movable parts firmly in this position, and pin up the loose wheel. Now turn the machine again to find whether the locking has interfered with your timing. The shuttle should approach its point close to the needle just when the latter has risen sufficiently to throw out a loop for the point to enter. Fix on the needle plate so that the needle may descend in the centre of its hole; but adjust this part still more accurately. Press the needle outwards with the screwdriver against the plate, and find whether the shuttle point is likely to become blunted in passing, or gets behind it. If there be any tendency to catch the needle, tap the plate so as to prevent the needle from springing into the race, and yet leave sufficient space for the thread to pass without chafing. Thread up the machine with about No. 50 cotton, and find, with cloth under the presser, whether the needle throws out a loop of sufficient size for the shuttle to pass into. Just a quick thanks to those who work so hard at unearthing historical text and bringing them forward to today by 'copy republishing'.Having a number of the old(1800's) sewing machines mentioned in this book that have no documentation available outside of the Smithsonian or in the hands of private collectors, I found this to be a treasure trove of information. I have now accurately restored two of these old machines from the information contained within. The Wheeler and Wilson information is incredibly comprehensive!
The format is photocopy with enhanced clarity printed onto a medium-weight book-stock paper and paperback bound. It is a fine book to read for a historical perspective and a great manual for the setup and repair of machines of this period. Especially the Wheeler & Wilson No.s 1 - 4 & 8 which includes blowups of parts and machine illustrations. The only weaknesses are light treatment of chain-stitch machines with only a small section dedicated to Willcox & Gibbs and the lack of illustration or visual guidance for adjusting. The technical direction is just that- written technical direction. That having been said I found that the lack of illustration was not a deterrent to the refurbishing of my machines. The accuracy of the description was illustrating and also illuminating in understanding more than just how the machine works, but how each mechanism evolved and works in its relation to the other parts.
Well worth the price. Highly recommend.

This book is a must for anyone interested in preserving and using historical sewing machines. It totally removed over 100 years of OSMG (and many times grossly incorrect) ideas, assumptions, and opinions, and takes you back to the era when these machines were actually still in use. This book explains in very good detail the proper way to adjust the Wheeler & Wilson curved-needle machines, which is something that I have found there are many incorrect opinions out there concerning. I teach a workshop on restoring antique and vintage machines and found this book an excellent resource! I recommend this one to anyone dealing with the most popular machines being used prior to the mid 1880's, including the Wheeler & Wilson, Willcox & Gibbs, Grover & Baker, and the Singer 12. The information contained is worth far more than the price of the book!
